If you are visiting Poulsbo on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State and consider yourself to be a bit of a wine connoisseur, then you should definitely look at a visit to one of the local wineries for a tour and tastings. These have become popular with people from all walks of life in recent years, all over the world, and there are thousands of them currently in operation across the U.S.A alone. Washington State is the fastest-growing region in the United States when it comes to wine production as it has all the necessary climate characteristics required to produce great wines. These moderate weather conditions mean well-drained soils, little rain, ample warmth, long summer days, cool nights, and cool fall temperatures. When all these factors are combined it produces the best environment to grapes ideal for winemaking.
When it comes to premier local wines, there is only one name in the area and that is the Eleven Winery which is a small, family-run winery that has been dedicated to producing great wine since it was established in 2003. Chief winemaker here is Matt Albee who is supported by his wife and loyal team of volunteers who run the wine club and are responsible for the two tasting room locations. The winery itself is situated on Bainbridge Island and unlike similar establishments this is not an expensive old building but is in fact a 1970’s house in a beautiful location with one key feature – a large garage. It was this structure that was converted into the winery which is currently producing a wide array of wines, made with the best varietals in the state including favorites like Malbec, Syrah, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, Pinot Grigio and Roussanne as well as Viognier, a dry rose´ and a selection of white and red Ports. This facility is open to the public for tours as is their popular tasting room in the heart of the shopping district where visitors can sample some of the best wines made onsite , from a selection of white, red, rose and dessert wines.
The second tasting room is situated right in the center of downtown Poulsbo, on Front Street near the Water Front where visitors are offered a sampling of five wines for just $7 which can be selected from a menu which lists the top ten current releases from Eleven Winery. There is also a wide range of wines to choose from if you wish to purchase bottles to take home with you, with something to suit every palate and these can also be ordered online. The tasting rooms are open throughout the year although only on set days during the winter months while peak seasons will see longer opening hours. Winter 2013.14 sees the Bainbridge Tasting Room is open from 1pm until 7pm on Mondays , noon until 7pm on Saturdays and from noon until 5pm on Sundays while the Poulsbo Tasting Room opens from 1-6pm Thursday and Friday, from noon until 6pm on Saturday and on Sunday from noon to 5pm.
